Wouldn’t a Reality TV-Show about the making of a picturebook be so interesting? A little peek into someone’s life and process; complete with cozy music and maybe a sprinkle of unhinged drama?
If anyone is at Netflix reading this right now, I’m your gal if you want slice-of-life realness!
But until I get that big flashy streaming contract, we have good ol’ Youtube.
In case you missed it, my book LOST STICK came out early this spring. To celebrate, I filmed and posted a very professional and serious deep-dive into how I illustrated the cover art.
HOWEVER.
Back in 2022 while I was actually making this book, I recorded some day-in-the-life videos while I worked. For the past few months I’ve been busy with my brand new baby, but I finally got around to posting it as a three-part mini-series called ✷ILLUSTRATOR DIARIES✷.
In contrast to the above video, this series is an unpolished, unfiltered look at my day-to-day process. Watch me paint, problem solve, and be goofy in real time!
✷ Episode One: Starting a Picture Book
Before illustrating a book, I try to figure out the characters and style! Because this was my first time illustrating a book traditionally, I wanted to create some tests to figure out if I was making a huge mistake or not.
✷ Episode Two: Painting a Picture Book Page
In this video, I paint the endpapers. To pass the time, I also answer some questions I received from my followers; This includes how I manage my time and avoid procrastination, how I choose my colors, and my thoughts on agents!
✷ Episode Three: Painting a Picture Book Cover
In this final chapter, I take you through how I illustrated the cover! I talk about my materials, the planning, painting, collage, digitizing, and finally the editing.
I hope you enjoy this little series! If you do, I recorded similar videos for my new book SARI SISTERS which I’ll be posting next month, so keep an eye out for them!
I agree, a tv show about making a picture book would be lovely! And I would argue- put in the unglamourous/ un-aesthetic bits too!
Thank you as always Anoosha! I look forward to reading your posts as they're helpful and interesting, with just the perfect amount of fun and quirkiness! Have a great day x Nell.
