In case you missed it, earlier this week my latest picture book Sari Sisters hit the shelves!
Written by the lovely Anitha Rao-Robinson and published by my amazing team at Penguin Random House (working with Aneeka + Jim for the third time in a row now!)
The facts are these:
Ruhi is ready for her weekend tradition: a dance party with her older sister, Kayra! Everything is ready to go--but where is Kayra?
Kayra is wearing a sari for the first time and thinks she is too mature to play Ruhi’s silly games. Maybe Ruhi needs to find a way to loosen everyone up!This beautifully written story is about the tight-knit bond between sisters as they navigate adolescent milestones and the beauty of updating traditional customs for a modern audience.
I was so thrilled to be invited onto this book; as someone with THREE sisters, I could see my family and the joy of sisterhood reflected so well in this story.
This book was illustrated with gouache, color pencil, POSCA markers and a tissue paper collage to imitate the look of fabric! (You can find some of my character exploration in this post!)
Using tissue paper was a fun experiment but I probably won’t do it again because of how messy it gets haha.
(It gets VERY messy.)
I ended up photographing the collage (as I did with LOST STICK) to better capture the depth and shadows. I was worried about how it would look once digitized, but I am supremely pleased with how it printed.
Here are some sneak peek pages so you may also ooh and ahh and potentially even woahh at the collage work.
Illustrating a book is hard work and takes up a lot of time and floor space. Here are all the painted pages I did for the book!
But what’s better than a pile of loose paper is seeing it assembled into an actual bound book with words and stuff, so maybe check it out at your library or buy it for a cool kid in your life.
If you’re not convinced, here are some reviews from important people like:

OK THAT’S IT BYE!
Congratulations. The paper worked so well. It’s brilliant.
So beautiful! Congrats!!!!! I love the work and joyous illustrations and the narrative/subject of the book, big fan!
