Aladdin was originally supposed to be set in Baghdad, Iraq but was retooled to a fictional setting because of the Gulf War.
The issue comes from the fact that the film is someone’s vague idea of what Arabia feels like, without any accurate research being done. Princess Jasmine doesn't count for Indian women, but she also barely counts for Arab women as well.
The film is set in 'Arabia' but weirdly mish mashes a lot of things from South Asian culture. From the costuming, to the architecture (the palace looks like the Taj Mahal), to various elements sprinkled throughout that are of Indian origin (tigers, sword swallowers, snake charming, fire walking). There are no arab voice actors, and they sprinkle in some Arabic words and muslim phrases here and there, but without any real understanding of the context behind it.
In the live action version, although they try to rectify some of their mistakes, they still hired a British Indian actress to play as Jasmine.
What a beautiful book, Anoosha! And the story behind is so powerful and touching. You did such an important job for all girls and woman. 🥹🫶 I wish you a great success with this book 😌❤️
Why people think Princess Jasmine counts for Indian women is beyond me. According to Disney Studios, Agrabah was inspired by the Levant
